Rohit Sharma, a top batsman of today, has now addressed Test cricket and revealed that his father Gurunath wasn’t pleased when Rohit decided to step away. The ‘Hitman’ mentioned that his father has always been fond of the five-day format, rather than the format used in shorter games.
Rohit gave up playing Test cricket on 7 May , a few days ahead of former captain Virat Kohli making a similar decision. And a month before the England Test series began , the two brought down the curtains on their Test careers together.
My dad was employed by a transport company. Similarly, I said that both my mom and my father gave up things for us to live comfortably. From the very start, my father has been a supporter of Test cricket,” Rohit said as he spoke at the launch of The Diary of a Cricketer’s Wife, written by Puja Pujara in Mumbai.
He is not in favor of the modern approaches to the game. I have not forgotten the day I got 264 in the ODI. Then he said, ‘Well played’ and went to another aircraft. Well done. He did not show any excitement. We should encourage students to take part in all the sports activities.
All in all, he played 67 matches in Test cricket and hit 12 times for centuries, 18 times for fifties, scoring 4,301 runs before stepping away, also adding 12 as captain.
‘He’s had a major impact on where I stand in life now’
He said that his father was there with him from the first days he started playing as a school kid.
You compete in school cricket games. Then comes U19, Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Irani Trophy and India A for cricketers at this stage. I have accomplished all of this in my life. Therefore, he has witnessed the ups and downs of my journey. As a result of all this, I now play for the Indian team.
The red ball cricket is something my father has witnessed me play a lot. So he values the importance of playing red-ball cricket. It goes without saying that he was a little sad when I said I wanted to stop competing. It was also very joyful for me at the same time. Still, yes, that’s who my father is. He has pretty much made a big difference in my current life as well. It simply would not have happened if it wasn’t for their assistance.
After winning the T20 World Cup last year, Rohit and Kohli quit Twenty20 cricket and have now retired from Test cricket. Both of them are turning their attention to One-Day Internationals and have their eyes set on the 2027 ICC World Cup.
Not only when I scored well, but he made sure to talk about my performance on every occasion in Test cricket. He loved soccer with that much passion. Clearly, he has observed your career progress from up close, the ‘Hitman’ noted.
Rohit didn’t perform well as a batsman or captain in India’s Test series against New Zealand and Australia and this raised doubts about his role in India’s red-ball team.
