Former cricketer and current India head coach Gautam Gambhir has strongly criticized Royal Challengers Bengaluru for their victory celebration after the IPL 2025 final. A stampede during the celebration in Bengaluru caused the death of 11 people and injured 33 others.
Gambhir expressed his views during a press conference before the Indian team’s departure for the England Test series. He said that such road shows are unnecessary and dangerous. According to Gambhir, human lives are more important than public celebrations.
He added that the celebration should have been held inside a stadium or in a closed setting. He said the incident is tragic and everyone is responsible for what happened. He hopes that such events do not happen again in the future.
Gambhir also questioned the readiness of the organisers. He said that if they were not prepared to manage the crowd then they should not have planned the road show. He said it was a simple decision that could have saved lives.
India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill was also present at the press conference. Gambhir avoided commenting on whether the fan culture has changed but stressed that every franchise and team should act responsibly. He said every life matters.
Gambhir admitted that he understands the fans’ excitement. But he said that the tragedy in Bengaluru was far more serious than any celebration. He said losing 11 people in such a way is unacceptable.
Thousands of fans had gathered at M Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate RCB’s first IPL title win. But poor arrangements led to a deadly stampede. Later RCB announced a compensation of 10 lakh rupees to each family of the deceased.
